The engineering team in Apple's cutting-edge Product Safety department is responsible for ensuring all products we release meet international safety standards and regulations, but also meet performance requirements that befit Apple's brand and the highest expectations. Our mission is to ensure that Apple products are safe for use throughout the world and align with worldwide safety requirements throughout each device's lifetime. One important aspect of our mission is to evaluate safety field returns, and customer feedback, to understand failure mechanisms and drive continuous, product improvements. We're looking for a tenacious and seasoned Hardware Engineer with relevant expertise in Failure Analysis (FA), Project Leadership/Management, Process Engineering, Field Surveillance, and Multi-functional Engagement. This will be a leading role that calls for a professional who understands how to work across multiple organizations, handle challenging interests, and drive timely actions, all while exercising an exacting attention-to-detail on field return analyses and root cause determinations.

The Product Safety Engineering group seeks an experienced failure analysis engineer who will: - Provide clear, data-driven, and detailed evaluations for Safety field returns - Provide technical leadership to technicians and support staff, review finished assessments, and lead deep FA inquiries as needed, employing myriad analytical techniques - Take a leading role among engineers and drive synthesis across regions and cross-functional teams - Generate data and feedback to be used toward influencing new designs and/or PRQs at the system and module levels - Work closely with our state-of-the-art failure analysis labs to determine root causes when examining customer safety returns - Work closely with cross-functional teams such as AppleCare, Exec Relations, hardware engineering, reliability, legal, as well as our technicians - Engage in continuous improvement of evaluation methods, standardize processes, and train junior staff members - Deliver executive briefings and finished products developed to inform and guide product decisions across the Apple ecosystem - Work well (and thrive) under pressure, tight deadlines, and ambiguous circumstances - Embark on international and/or domestic travel up to 15% of the time, as business needs dictate
Education & Experience
- Bachelors degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) preferred - Proven experience in lieu of education shall be considered on case-by-case basis

Key Qualifications
- Possess 7+ years of experience evaluating the field returns of consumer electronics, drawing from a Safety/Reliability/Quality Engineering subject area, ideally at a system product level
- Design or Process Engineer experience with intimate understanding of Apple products, devices, and manufacturing (or their equivalents). The ideal candidate would be familiar with analytical techniques such as optical, electrical, mechanical, and material/chemical evaluations. These would include, but are not limited to CT and X-ray analysis, SEM, FDIR, etc.
- Experience conducting field trend analyses and generating reports to be consumed at the team and executive levels. Proficiency in using analytical and statistical software and tools are big pluses
- Shown experience in executive presentation and cross-functional communication. Candidate must have strong leadership skills and knows how to influence across organizations and build consensus through data-driven arguments
- Superlative written and spoken communication skills, with a proclivity for action
- High hunger factor with a keen appreciation for schedule constraints and familiarity with rapid development cycles. Calm under fire
- Experience with safety-related failure mechanisms, Failure Analysis techniques, Safety Standards, and/or Project Management
- Experience working with overseas Manufacturing and/or Vendor Management are highly desirable
- Previous management or supervisory experience is a plus
